Chapter One

First Year

Four hours into day one of guardian training, and Gemma Alcourt had made a grand total of zero friends. Not exactly encouraging for someone who’d planned to be far more popular at the Guild than she’d been in junior school. There, most of the faerie children had teased her for being a halfling—which she wasn’t; black and brown were two completely different colors and her hair consisted of both, so she was all faerie, thank you very much—but Gemma was certain her classmates at the Guild wouldn’t bother with childish taunts like that. She would impress her peers with her knowledge of the Creepy Hollow Guild, and she’d wind up popular in no time.

Sadly, things hadn’t gone down that way. No one cared that she’d been inside the Guild dozens of times before, that she knew where everything was, or that she easily led her team to victory during the orientation treasure hunt this morning. Oh no. Having insider knowledge of the Guild didn’t matter. The only thing that seemed to matter was guardian heritage—and Gemma was sorely lacking in that department. Her mom was an admin at the Guild, and her dad was a florist—the furthest thing from cool, according to Saskia Starkweather, loudest mouth in the class. Saskia’s grandmother was Head Councilor of the Guild of Guardians years ago, so of course that gave Saskia more bragging rights than anyone else.

So that was how Gemma found herself sitting alone—alone!—in the dining hall during lunch. Ugh. This was even worse than junior school. At least there she’d had Cami. But Cami planned to be a teacher one day, not a guardian, so Gemma was left to face Guild training—and eating lunch, it seemed—on her own. Well, not entirely on her own, if you considered the four girls sitting at the other end of the table. But they were several years older than Gemma and hadn’t looked in her direction once, so she didn’t think they counted.

Thwack.

She sucked in a breath and jerked backward as something lightweight smacked her forehead. It dropped onto her sandwich before coming to rest beside her tray.

A crumpled-up wad of paper.

Gemma’s cheeks burned as her eyes flashed up and around the dining hall. There—one of her classmates, whipping his gaze away from her and laughing into his glass. She stood before she could think about it, swiping the crumpled paper from the table as she went. It was the tall boy, the one with green in his eyes and hair. He’d answered every question in their first lesson with some silly nonsense answer until Saskia turned on him and told him to shut up. Gemma marched between the tables and benches and stopped in front of him. “Trying to get my attention?” she demanded, holding out the scrunched paper.

The tall boy looked up, his eyes widening at the sight of her standing right there. The shorter, broader boy sitting beside him turned red and focused his gaze firmly on his tray.
